How to use Evernote to monitor your SEO efforts

Website Grader is a really good tool to benchmark your site on some SEO best practices. I was just grading a client of mine this morning, thinking how it would be good to keep a history of their progress when it hit me.

What i do now is take a screenshot of the grade, using the Evernote screenshot feature and automatically it is dated so i can use Evernote to keep track of our progress (or lack thereof).

You only need to watch about 30 seconds of this video to get the point. Making assumptions about your audience is risky business. Motrin made assumptions about their audience and is now in a PR world of hurt. The second lesson here is when you fuck up, don’t issue a half assed apology. There is a storm raging on Twitter right now, what a great opportunity to bring some honesty to the situation.

“She is such a compelling figure, and she has helped, without a doubt, with the Republican base,” CNN Chief National Correspondent John King said. “But she’s also hurting with key constituencies, like suburban women and independents, and there’s a big question that, if McCain loses, does she try to emerge as the leader of the party heading into the 2012 cycle?”

Translation?

The problem with Pownce

You can probably relate to this if you 1) are a twitter user and 2) follow Kevin Rose, Daniel Burka or Leah Culver.

Here’s my issue with Pownce: Over the course of a day i might see a tweet like this from one of the Pownce people:

Ok great, sounds interesting lets click on the link. Takes me here:

Hmmm, this doesn’t seem to be the article as advertised. Looks like i have to click on yet another link.

Finally. My gripe with this is you just made me click through 2 links to get to the content. That’s not a good experience. Having Pownce in the way of me getting to that content added no benefit to me, so it’s clear that the whole “Pownced” tweet thing is just a way to drive traffic to Pownce. Granted, this is not so much a technical issue with Pownce i’m sure it works fine - but an attempt at starting some sort of snowball marketing effect by it’s founders, like the Paris Hilton sidekick story that kickstarted Digg’s success. Pownce is not Digg!

How are you using Evernote?

I have been using Evernote lately for business meetings and i’m loving it. I hate taking notes. If you have an iPhone (or other supported device) you can let it do the heavy lifting for you. When the meeting starts, i capture the discussion as a “voice note”. The mic is pretty good at picking up someone speaking even across the room. Typically there is some scribbling that has been done on the whiteboard as well. After the meeting, i’ll just take a shot of the board with the camera as a “snapshot note”.

Now when i need to refer back to the meeting i can access virtually everything that took place. Love it! All the content is stored on the Evernote web service, so it syncs with your Evernote desktop client as well which means whether you are at your desktop or mobile device your data is accessible.

The only complaint i have, is that voice notes are limited to 5 minutes in length. So right now i have to quickly save every 5 minutes and start another ‘part’ to the meeting. I suspect this may be a limitation of the iPhone SDK though.
